What do people think about this whole thing? To summarize, for those not in the know, Fifty Shades of Greyis an erotic (patronizingly called “Mommy Porn” in the press) novel that originally began as a Twilight fanfiction called “Master of the Universe.” It’s selling really well, getting a lot of buzz, and as described in the link, was picked up for a movie deal.
On the one hand, taking your Twilight fanfic, changing the names from “Bella” and “Edward” to “Anastasia” and “Christian” and then selling it is morally wrong.
On the other hand, the fanfic on which it was based is one of those All-Human/Alternate universe fics that has nothing to do with Twilight other than the names in the first place. There are no vampires or werewolves, the main characters aren’t teenagers, it’s certainly not about abstinence or other conservative values. “Bella” is a college student and “Edward” is an older, overbearing, ridiculously wealthy business man into BDSM.
Did you read MotU or Fifty Shades? (I haven’t) Do you like the AH/AU trend in fanfic? What is the appeal of those kind of stories to you? Do you think it still counts as Twilight fanfic when the only thing that remains are the names and characters’ appearances?
Hey, Fifty Shades actually gives me hope. You know, I’m working on fanfic. Maybe it’ll get published. If Twilight AND it’s progeny fanfic-turned-novel can, why the fuck can’t I.
